Recycling PVC polymers systematically

Shredding production waste with the WEIMA W5.14 shredder

A UK-based company specializing in the manufacture of PVC polymer products has specifically expanded its internal recycling capacities. The aim was to process bulky plastic waste directly on site and return it to the recycling cycle instead of disposing of it at great expense.
Production waste and rejects are reduced to a defined size by shredding and then processed into granulate. This granulate can be directly reintegrated into the manufacturing process. The result of the project is a closed material cycle with measurable economic and ecological benefits.

The challenge: Ensuring recyclability despite a limited budget

The company was faced with the task of implementing a high-performance shredding solution, even though the investment budget was clearly limited. At the same time, throughput, output quality, and operational reliability had to meet the requirements of industrial plastics processing.
The company was therefore looking for a cost-effective solution that would offer high plant availability and be ready for use at short notice. Support was provided by Fercell Engineering , the official WEIMA dealer for England.

It doesn't always have to be brand new

The ideal solution was a refurbished WEIMA W5.14 single-shaft shredder. Used WEIMA machines are fully tested, serviced, and repaired in-house so that they can continue to operate reliably in industrial applications for many years to come. This is an ideal option when new machines are not economically viable or short delivery times are required.

The shredder is part of a complete recycling system consisting of a feed conveyor belt, the WEIMA W5.14 shredder with closed feed hopper, a discharge conveyor, and a UF5 dust extraction system.

Safe and clean recycling processes

The material is manually placed on the feed conveyor and fed into the shredder. After shredding, the material is transported via the discharge conveyor to a collection container, where it is ready for further processing for granulation.
The closed feed hopper ensures that plastic flakes and dust particles remain inside the system. Any dust produced is reliably fed to the UF5 filter system and collected in collection bags. These are easy to change, reducing downtime to a minimum.

WEIMA W5 Shredder: Powerful technology for demanding materials

The WEIMA W5.14 shredder with single-shaft technology was specially developed for processing a wide variety of plastic waste, from bulky plastic parts to tear-resistant fibers and films. This makes the machine ideal for flexible use directly in the production environment.
At the heart of the system is the universally applicable V-rotor with a diameter of 500 mm and a rotor length of 1,400 mm. It ensures high throughput rates while offering maximum flexibility in material handling, even with plastics that are difficult to shred.

The counter knives can be conveniently adjusted from the outside and are also reversible. Regular rotation of the cutting knives ensures consistently high throughput rates and significantly extends the service life of the tools.
The W5 series is particularly easy to maintain. The screen basket can be opened hydraulically at the touch of a button. The wide inspection flap gives the customer direct access to the rotor.

Recycling pays off: Less waste, more recyclables, closed loops

By shredding PVC waste, the material volume is significantly reduced, and valuable materials are saved from landfill. At the same time, a homogeneous output is produced that is ideally suited for further processing into granules and can be reused in production.

In this way, the British plastics company lowers disposal costs, increases resource efficiency, and consistently focuses on sustainable plastics recycling.
