Heating with biomass: English furniture manufacturer turns waste wood into its own energy

Wood 28.01.2026

Production waste from wood processing does not necessarily incur high disposal costs. On the contrary, waste wood has enormous potential for energy recovery. A British furniture manufacturer, which produces large quantities of wood waste every day from offcuts, rejects, and various processing operations, recognized this opportunity.
Instead of disposing of the material at great expense, the company opted for a sustainable approach: shredding the waste wood into usable wood chips, which are then used as fuel for biomass heating.

High volumes of waste and rising disposal costs

The ever-increasing amounts of bulky wood waste took up valuable storage space on the premises of this long-established company and resulted in continuously rising disposal costs. At the same time, there was a desire to make the company’s energy supply more sustainable and reduce heating costs in the long term.
The company was therefore looking for a powerful shredding solution that would reliably produce homogeneous wood chip quality, ideally suited for use in a biomass heating plant.

Precise wood chips for the heating system: with a WEIMA WLK 6 S shredder

A complete system solution was implemented at the customer’s site in England, consisting of a WEIMA WLK 6 S single-shaft shredder, a feed conveyor, and a discharge chain conveyor that transports the shredded material directly to an external storage silo. The planning and implementation of the plant was carried out by Fercell Engineering , WEIMA’s official partner for the English market.

The WEIMA WLK 6 S

The WEIMA WLK 6 S with a rotor length of 800 mm processes wood waste effortlessly and reduces it to wood chips with a grain size of approximately 20 mm. A uniform, homogeneous output size is crucial for the smooth operation of wood chip heating systems.
Thanks to the built-in interchangeable screen, the grain size can be flexibly adjusted should material requirements change in the future. The 20 mm perforated screen can then be easily unscrewed and replaced with a perforated screen with a larger or smaller diameter. Even outdoor installation of the shredder is no problem. Rotor bearings offset from the base frame provide reliable protection against dust and contamination. In order to make optimum use of the height of the discharge conveyor, the machine frame of the WLK 6 S has been raised accordingly.

Smooth material flow

Robust conveyor technology to the silo and heating system
The shredded wood waste is transported via a robust chain conveyor made of galvanized steel and fed directly into an external silo. From there, the material continuously supplies the biomass heating system.
The conveyor solution combines horizontal and ascending conveyor sections of up to 90°, enabling efficient material transport over longer distances. Large maintenance openings, external bearing housings, and a robust gear and drive concept ensure quick and easy maintenance.

What has changed? Sustainability, cost savings, and value creation

By shredding waste wood on a daily basis, the WEIMA WLK 6 S wood shredder significantly reduces waste volume, lowers disposal costs, and creates valuable open space on the company premises. At the same time, waste is turned into a valuable energy source that helps heat the company’s own production facilities.
In addition, the wood chips can be further processed, for example into briquettes, which have a higher energy density and burn longer than conventional wood chips. The English furniture manufacturer is now energetically future-proof.
