At the Radaschitz Carpentry Shop in Riegersburg, Styria, high-end interior design meets high-end wood recycling. From Waste to Energy: Sustainable Wood Utilization at Radaschitz
At Radaschitz, high-quality kitchen and furniture projects for international clients in the premium segment are created in a production facility spanning approximately 2,500 square meters. Around 45 skilled workers in the areas of woodworking, metalworking, painting, and design work on custom solutions.
This process generates a wide variety of waste materials every day—including solid wood, MDF, particleboard scraps, wood shavings, and sanding dust from production. In some cases, coated or painted materials are also processed. Instead of disposing of these materials at great expense, Radaschitz follows a sustainable circular approach: the resulting wood scraps are directly recycled for energy within the company’s own facilities.
Tried-and-true technology gets an update
With the modernization of the plant, the next generation of WEIMA shredding technology was also introduced at Radaschitz. A key advantage of the new solution lies in the optimized feed hopper of the TH 500 Vario Briquette Press are fed into the system. A built-in 15-mm round-hole screen ensures a uniform wood chip size and creates optimal conditions for the subsequent briquetting process. In addition to wood scraps, wood shavings and sawdust are also extracted from the production facilities and fed into the briquetting press.

The new TH 500 Vario Briquette Press offers another key advantage: Thanks to the integrated oil cooling system, continuous operation for several hours is possible without any issues. As a result, even the daily operating time of approximately five hours poses no problem for the company. Another distinctive feature of the Vario series is the physical separation of the pressing mechanism and the hydraulic unit. Both components can be set up independently of one another, which has enabled particularly flexible and compact integration into the existing production environment. Radaschitz produces approximately 120 cubic meters of wood briquettes per year.
The briquettes are used entirely within the company. Among other things, they supply thermal energy to the building’s heating system, the drying chambers for painted components, the spray booth, and equipment for wood drying and veneer gluing. In this way, Radaschitz creates a nearly closed-loop material cycle: production waste is directly converted into new energy for its own manufacturing processes.
