Using wood waste to heat the workshop

Success Stories Ilsfeld, 31.01.2020

The shopfitter 'RD Shopfitting' shreds its wood waste with a WEIMA WL 15 single-shaft shredder in order to use it for energy generation.

For over 50 years, the family business has been manufacturing shop fittings for retailers and commercial buildings in Sheffield, UK. The company started out in a small workshop under a railway arch on the edge of town. Today, the shop fitter works in a 1,200 square metre workshop in the heart of Sheffield.

Most of the employees have been with RD Shopfitting for many years. They have a high level of skills and experience in working with a wide range of materials, from traditional wood to high-tech solid flooring. The shop fitters have already designed shops for many well-known customers, such as John Lewis, Pizza Hut and Greggs.

In daily operation, RD Shopfitting produces large quantities of wood waste. In order to shred these, the shopfitter purchased a WEIMA WL 4 single-shaft shredder ten years ago. With a working width of 600 mm, a rotor diameter of 252 mm and up to 18.5 kW drive power, the WL 4 shreds wood waste of all kinds without any problems. This includes hard and soft wood, waste wood, OSB and MDF residues or plywood.

In order to make good use of the shredded wood scraps, the shopfitter also installed a biomass burner to heat the production and office rooms. This enabled RD Shopfitting to reduce both energy and waste disposal costs.

Since then, RD Shopfitting has grown significantly and consequently produces more wood waste. In order to recycle it even more efficiently, the shop fitter decided on a new, larger shredder from WEIMA. Via Fercell, a WEIMA dealer in Great Britain, RD Shopfitting was able to trade in its old machine in part for a WEIMA WL 15 single-shaft shredder.

This can be used for the shredding of large quantities due to a considerably larger hopper opening. Further reasons for the new acquisition were the larger rotor with a working length of 1500 mm and a diameter of 368 mm as well as the energy-saving WAP gearbox with up to 75 kW. Thus the family-owned company is well equipped for the next few years of growth and can continue to recycle its wood waste to reuse energy.
