Fighting fine dust

Tons of process-related fine dust are produced during the recycling of paper waste. Many companies are literally sitting on a powder keg of paper particles. Enava Limited from South Wales relies on WEIMA compaction technology to minimize the risks of an explosion while protecting the health of its employees on site. A new C 150 briquetting press now presses paper dust into compact briquettes that are then sold as an energy source.

According to its website, the Welsh family-run business is one of the UK's leading paper recyclers and can now look back on over thirty years of history. Every day, employees process over 200 bales of waste paper and cardboard. The weight of a bale is roughly the same as that of a full-grown great white shark – one metric ton. In addition, Enava recycles half a million books a week to make them into the raw material for new reading material.

Paper recycling is booming in Wales. Enava has therefore continuously expanded its production capacities in recent years and invested in new machines. This includes controlling fine dust over an area of 60,000 square meters. A few months ago, Enava contacted Fercell Engineering, the official WEIMA dealer in the United Kingdom. The extraction and compaction experts from Aylesford near London were able to work with Enava to develop a safe and economical disposal solution.

Its centerpiece is the WEIMA C 150 briquetting press. Using hydraulic pressure (without adhesives or binders), it converts loose paper and cardboard dust into densely compacted round briquettes with a diameter of 50 mm. A central air extraction system first feeds the fine dust into the feed hopper of the press machine. The finished briquettes are conveyed via a discharge pipe into plastic boxes – ready for sale and collection.

But sales are actually only a positive side effect. Enava has achieved all of its important project objectives with the help of Fercell: a cleaner shop floor along with machines, cleaner air and healthier working conditions for employees. And, of course, a significant reduction in the risk of explosion.
