Sustainability in Woodworking: WEIMA’s Destroy Responsibly™ Program Returns to AWFS® Fair 2023

The highly anticipated AWFS® Fair 2023, hosted by the Association of Woodworking & Furnishings Suppliers® (AWFS®), is set to take place from July 25-28 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Among the impressive lineup of exhibitors, WEIMA America, Inc. is bringing back its revolutionary Destroy Responsibly™ program, showcasing its commitment to sustainable wood waste management.

WEIMA has been at the forefront of the woodworking industry’s efforts to reduce waste and promote eco-friendly practices. The Destroy Responsibly™ program aims to raise awareness about responsible wood waste disposal and provide practical solutions for recycling and repurposing.

A sustainable tradition

At the AWFS® Fair 2023, WEIMA will showcase its innovative shredding technology through a live demonstration. Behind the tradeshow hall, the WLK 10 single-shaft shredder, a powerful machine known for its efficiency and reliability, will be in operation, processing the wood scrap generated during demonstrations on the tradeshow floor. The shredded wood waste will be transported to the shredder throughout the show, highlighting the immediate benefits of sustainable waste management.

The success of the Destroy Responsibly™ program would not be possible without the cooperation of several organizations. Freeman, a leading provider of event solutions that also provides services for the AWFS® Fair, has partnered with WEIMA to ensure smooth logistics and support for the shredding operations. The Association of Woodworking & Furnishings Suppliers® (AWFS®) has provided valuable support and resources to promote the program to attendees and exhibitors. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, also known as LVCVA, has played a crucial role in coordinating with local entities and highlighting the program’s sustainability efforts.

Where does the shredded wood waste go?

Additionally, Repurpose America, a 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to repurposing and recycling materials, is coordinating the reuse of the shredded wood after the show.

Repurpose America’s involvement in the Destroy Responsibly™ program adds an extra layer of environmental benefit. Instead of simply disposing of the shredded wood waste, it will be donated to the University of Nevada Las Vegas. At UNLV, the wood waste will be utilized in various sustainable practices, such as ground cover, composting processes, and bedding for a local animal shelter. This collaboration ensures that the wood waste generated during the fair contributes positively to the local community and supports ongoing sustainability initiatives.
