Cycling for a Cause

WEIMA America, Inc. has a Charitable Giving program in place with one goal in mind: to enrich the community where we live and work. This quarter's charitable contribution hit very close to home for some employees as a member of the WEIMA team biked for a great cause.

Ride for ALS Research

The WEIMA America, Inc. departmental delegates for charitable giving opted to support a 200 mile bike ride benefitting the ALS Association in our area. "ALS" stands for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, which is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. It is also known as "Lou Gherig's Disease" after the famous baseball player who played for the New York Yankees and died from ALS in 1941.

The Velocity Cycling team gets ready for the 200 mile ride for ALS.

You may have heard of ALS from the Ice Bucket Challenge that circulated on social media platforms a few years ago, where individuals recorded themselves pouring a bucket of ice over their head and then donated to ALS research. Once they were done, the very cold, very wet person would challenge three friends to participate also.

As silly as it sounds, this fundraiser was extremely successful. Through the hundreds of millions of dollars that were raised during this challenge, a gene sequence was finally identified that was linked to the disease. This discovery has led to many new avenues of research, providing hope to people and families who are in the midst of fighting this devastating disease, which currently has no cure.

A familiar face in the crowd

WEIMA Senior Field Technician, Josh Gulnac, approached the delegates on the current Charitable Giving Committee about supporting his cycling team in a fundraiser for ALS research!

The Velocity Cycling team was set to ride from Charlotte, North Carolina to Pinehurst, North Carolina-- and back! The total trek was 200 miles. Collectively, his team raised $12,140 that will go directly toward biomedical research, patient and family care, and transportation costs for patients receiving treatments.

ALS is a disease that has affected family members of current WEIMA America, Inc. employees, making this cause extra special.
