Plastic Boxes – Round 2

10.01.2022

No throwing in the towel! The duo of a WEIMA W5.14 shredder and New Herbold granulator get defective plastic boxes ready for the next job. To do this, however, the boxes first have to be shredded to a uniform size.

01

The dream of Zero Waste production – A British WEIMA customer is well on the way to making the dream a reality. The company has been manufacturing plastic boxes in a wide range of handy sizes for over 20 years. The majority of the boxes are patented and are known for being especially rugged for transportation and stacked storage.

Production takes place in the UK and the United States. This regularly results in inevitable production waste, which needs to be recycled in the best possible way, i.e., without any material loss. A two-stage recycling solution was developed with the help of the English WEIMA dealer Fercell, located southeast of London.

Plastic recycling expert: the WEIMA W5.14 shredder

05

The solution consists of a WEIMA W5.14 single-shaft shredder and a downstream New Herbold LM 600/1000 granulator. Both machines are connected to a conveyor belt for material handling. The WEIMA W5.14 can, however, also be operated as a single machine if required. The universal shredder is filled evenly via a spacious infeed conveyor. Since mostly hard plastics are crushed, the hopper has a lid that can be controlled by remote control.

06

This prevents pieces from uncontrollably jumping out of the machine. An overbelt magnet is used before the plastic, which is pre-cut to <50 mm, gets to the New Herbold granulator. This ensures that FE metals are separated out. The final flake size after granulation is <4 mm, which is ideal for the production of new plastic boxes.

07

The company thus not only wins on points but also hits the bull's eye with its new in-house recycling system. Expensive disposal costs, logistics and handling costs for production waste are eliminated entirely. Nothing is wasted. Everything is used. That's how a circular economy works.
