Paper Recycling Up. Landfill Deposits Down
The Environmental Paper Network (EPN), a collective of conservation organizations, just released a pulp and paper sustainability report that shows annual landfill deposits for paper are down significantly since 2005.
The State of the Paper Industry 2011: Steps Toward an Environmental Vision highlights that 26 million tons of paper were placed in landfills last year compared with 42 million tons in 2005. The latest report is an update from one issued in 2007 and reveals the massive scale of the environmental impacts of paper products EPN said.
The report also highlights statistics from the American Forest & Paper Association that shows 63.4% of paper consumed in 2009 was recovered for recycling in 2009. That number ticked up to 63.5% in 2010. The full report is available at http://environmentalpaper.org/state-of-the-paper-industry-2011.php.
