Plastic Recycling in beautiful South Carolina
Palmetto Synthetics currently manages multiple production lines at their Kingstree, South Carolina facility. With their in-house equipment, Palmetto Synthetics has the capability to produce specialty fibers from 1.5 to 2000 denier with greater efficiency and consistency. Having such specialized equipment enables Palmetto Synthetics the opportunity to custom design the right fiber type, right color, and most any other special property. Other properties may include, but are not limited to, flame retardants and anti-microbials.
There are many cases of collaboration between the two companies, WEIMA and Gamma Meccanica (Italy), including the line for the recycling of PET, delivered to U.S. customer, Palmetto Synthetics, LLC. The line is composed of the following: a GM125 COMPAC with ECOTRONIC control system (Cutter-Compactor), extruder, screen changer and underwater pelletizer. A WEIMA WLK 15 shredder with 150 kW drive performance is installed at the beginning of the line. The entire production line is capable of regenerating PET in the form of yarn, fabric, sheet and film.

Early in the process, the material is shredded by the WEIMA system. The WLK shredder is designed for high throughput quantities and is suitable for processing most plastics. The innovative “V” Rotor with adjustable counter knives allows for optimal shredding results. After it is shredded, the material to be recycled is introduced to the COMPAC’s Cutter-Compactor. Thanks to the newly installed ECOTRONIC system, the material undergoes a treatment of "pre-drying" and densification before it enters the extruder. Thanks to ECOTRONIC we have precision temperature control without the use of water. It accepts up to 10% moisture, virtually eliminating melt downs and saving up to 40% in energy consumption for the compactor motor. The machine also offers variable speed control. The GM125 extruder has a high-performance degassing system. It uses twin or double vent with high vacuum pumps to remove any possible residual moisture that is not extracted by the ECOTRONIC Cutter-Compactor. The screen changer, connected to the extruder, is a special design, which is specifically made for working with PET material and is capable of filtering down to 25 micron.
The end of the line consists of the underwater pelletizer model ideal to process all materials present on the market; especially materials with high fluidity such as PET, HOT-MELT, TPU and NYLON among others. The production capacity is 1000 kg/hour.
